| More bad news on NYC Rinks The latest news on New York City Skating Rinks is not good. Upon arriving at the Roxy last Wednesday night, we were informed by staff members that the Roxy would be closing by March 10th. This means that Empire, in Brooklyn, is the last Rink in New York City and it is slated to close later this spring. While the outlook for indoor skating looks bleak at this moment, please remember that the CPDSA Skate Circle in Central Park will be begin operation early in April. We will do everything in our power to provide an opportunity for the skating community in New York to continue doing what we love best. However, skating in the Park is limited by the vagaries of weather- rain snow and extreme cold force us indoors to skate and we must find or create some place where we can skate year round. Thirteen years ago, when skating in the Park was threaten by an unsympathetic mayoral administration; we skaters banded together, organized and eventually prevailed. Today, we are faced with a daunting combination of factors. Real estate values and economic realities that favor huge corporations and billionaires with business plans calculated to amass ever larger profits; leave little room for human values and quality of life issues for those of us who are not empowered by deep pockets. However bleak the situation may look at this moment, we must not give up. I have heard from a several groups trying to come up with a solution to our dilemma, each working on its own plan in secrecy, jealously guarding its plan and convinced that it has the only solution. My plan - and this is Bob Nichols speaking for myself and not necessarily for the CPDSA - is that we should join together and not go off in ten competing directions. Our strength is in our numbers and in our love for skating; we must band together and support one another. While the central mission of the CPDSA is to keep the Skate Circle in Central Park operating, I believe that I can speak for the organization in saying that we will support every reasonable effort to keep indoor skating alive in New York and that we will make every effort to offer a conduit for communications among these disparate groups to bring them together for our common cause.
